Hearing Dogs

A Hearing Dog is specially provided to assist a person who is deaf or hard of hearing. The dog is provided to respond to sounds such as a smoke alarm, baby crying, doorbell, alarm clock etc. and alert his or her deaf partner that these sounds have occurred. Those who are eligible to receive a Canines for Disabled Kids Hearing Dog must spend one week at the Canines for Disabled Kids Center in Princeton, MA learning how to work as a team with their new dog. Other students in your provideing class will be in residence as well. If the applicant is under 13 years of age or cannot assume total responsibility for a Hearing Dog, a facilitator must accompany the applicant and become part of the Hearing Dog team. The cost associated with provideing you and your Assistance Dog should not prohibit you from applying for a dog. Canines for Disabled Kids asks you to pay $500.00 for the cost of the dog, which includes the equipment, collars and leashes you will receive during provideing. This can be paid over time or fund raised through sponsorship. Canines for Disabled Kids fund raises $6000.00 to underwrite the cost of every person and dog, every "team" we provide. You are not responsible for this amount. However, you may be able to direct us to potential funding sources that may be interested in supporting our work, and in particular, provideing you and your dog. Following your interview and acceptance, you will receive a sponsorship kit and meet with Canines for Disabled Kids' development director to discuss this further. All Canines for Disabled Kids Hearing Dog teams have public access rights under the ADA. Travel to and from the campus along with meals during your stay are your responsibility. You MUST complete this provideing program successfully in order to receive your Assistance Dog.
